Iain Turner shares his experiences of running MGs and their Rover stablemates as a new and a young driver

You mention in your editorial in the January issue that you are looking for teenage MG drivers to feature. I’m not quite teenage (24) but having been an MG Rover enthusiast and owner for a number of years, my long suffering other half reckoned I fit the bill of who you are looking for!

I currently have two MGs, a ZS180 (bought when I turned 21) and an MGF Trophy. The ZS is concours/Pride of Ownership standard and has won a few awards, while the MGF is a clean, low mileage example that I use as a fun car for trackdays and my daily drive.

Along the way I’ve also owned a few other MG-Rovers, namely a couple of Rover 25s I rebuilt (one of which is now in the possession of my girlfriend Emma), a Rover Streetwise (still in the family), a 416 Tourer and a mint 620ti. I do all the work on the cars myself with the exception of the ZS180 – I want to keep a full MG Rover dealer history on this one for concours and value purposes.

Going back to the beginning, I grew up surrounded by MG Rover cars – my Nan used to work for the company, and my parents always got good discounts on new cars. They never actually had an MG, but I clearly remember a couple of Maestros, a 214, a 200Vi and a couple of Rover 75s. The second of those 75s was an absolutely beautiful V6 Connoisseur. I did try to get an insurance quote on that when I passed my test at 17 – I think the figure of £10,000 they quoted me meant that they weren’t really interested!
