Ben Richards is studying Automotive Design at Swansea Metropolitan University. This is his vision of how the next MG sports car should look
After two years of university, the final year of my Automotive Design degree beckoned. This consisted primarily of a major project, where I set my own design brief, then fulfilled it by completing design proposals, making a quarter scale clay model and turning that into a fibreglass model.
I’ve always been a big fan of the MG brand. None of my family ever owned one, but the MG cars that I can remember were the Metro, Maestro and Montego. I guess I just liked the look and character of them!
When I started my first year at the university, I knew I would get to do the big project and make the model at the end. I always knew I wanted to do an MG, but I was never completely sure what segment of car to do. When the time came, I didn’t want to do a retro revival, as much as MG’s long history of cars appeals to me. Instead, I wanted to create an original design that captures the essence of the brand from the past and from the new era.
